Chinese Herbal Medicine & Dementia | SynerQi Mount Annan
Dementia can affect memory, concentration, thinking and everyday life. For families looking for complementary approaches, Chinese herbal medicine is an area of growing research interest.
Research conducted through Western Sydney University and collaborating Sydney hospitals has investigated a Chinese herbal formulation called SaiLuoTong (WeiNaoKang) in people with vascular dementia.
In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study, researchers reported improvements in cognitive function and activities of daily living after 16 weeks compared with placebo.[1]
The formula studied contained ginkgo, ginseng and saffron.
These findings are encouraging, but they relate to a specific standardized research formula. They do not establish that Chinese herbal medicine can cure dementia or that every herbal prescription will produce the same results.
Why choose SynerQi?
At SynerQi Acupuncture & Herbal Medicine in Mount Annan, we take an individualized approach to Chinese medicine.
Rather than simply giving everyone the same herbal formula, we consider the individual and their presentation. Your consultation may include traditional Chinese medicine assessment such as pulse and tongue examination, together with discussion of your symptoms, health history and current medications.
Where appropriate, we may develop an individualized Chinese herbal prescription based on your presentation.
Not wanting to take herbal medicine?
Chinese herbal medicine isn’t the only option.
If you prefer not to take herbal medicine, acupuncture may provide another complementary approach. At SynerQi, we often use acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine together, when appropriate, to support an individual’s goals.
Your treatment plan is tailored to you. You can discuss your preferences, concerns and goals with your practitioner, and together determine whether acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine, or a combination of both is appropriate.
Our approach is to provide individualized complementary care, while recognizing the importance of appropriate medical assessment and ongoing care from your GP and other healthcare professionals.
