Acupuncture for Bell’s Palsy: Supporting Facial Nerve Recovery

Bell’s Palsy is a condition that causes temporary weakness or paralysis on one side of the face. It occurs when the facial nerve becomes inflamed. This nerve controls facial movement, blinking, and some aspects of speech.

When the nerve is affected, people may notice symptoms such as:

  • Drooping on one side of the face

  • Difficulty smiling or closing one eye

  • Changes in speech or facial expression

Recovery often occurs over time, but it can take weeks or months.

At SynerQi Acupuncture, we provide gentle acupuncture treatments designed to support circulation, reduce muscle tension, and assist the body’s natural healing processes.

What Research Says About Acupuncture and Bell’s Palsy

Research has explored how acupuncture may help support facial nerve recovery. Proposed mechanisms include:

  • Improving blood circulation around the facial nerve

  • Supporting the body’s natural anti-inflammatory responses

  • Stimulating the release of natural pain-relieving chemicals such as endorphins and enkephalins¹

A recent randomised controlled trial by Li (2024) compared electroacupuncture with standard electrical therapy in people who still had facial weakness more than one year after Bell’s palsy.

Key findings included:

  • Participants received treatment three times per week for six weeks

  • The electroacupuncture group showed greater improvement in facial movement and symmetry

  • No major side effects were reported

These findings suggest that electroacupuncture may be a safe complementary therapy to support facial function during recovery².

Earlier systematic reviews, including one from the Cochrane Collaboration in 2022, also reported that acupuncture may improve recovery rates when used alongside standard medical care, although more high-quality research is still needed³.

What to Expect at SynerQi

Treatment at SynerQi Acupuncture is tailored to your stage of recovery and comfort level.

Your plan may include:

  • Gentle acupuncture on the face and body to support circulation and relaxation

  • Self-care advice and collaboration with your GP or specialist if needed

All treatments are provided by registered practitioners in a professional and safe clinical environment.

Supporting Your Recovery

Most people recover from Bell’s palsy over time. Acupuncture may provide supportive care that helps reduce discomfort and support facial nerve recovery.

If you or someone you know is experiencing symptoms, you can speak with our team at SynerQi Acupuncture about whether acupuncture may be a suitable complementary option.
