Understanding BELLS PALSY
Bell’s palsy is a temporary weakness or paralysis on one side of the face, often caused by inflammation of the facial nerve. It can make smiling, blinking, or speaking difficult, and recovery can take time.
At SynerQi Acupuncture in Mount Annan, we provide gentle, supportive acupuncture treatments designed to help improve circulation, reduce tension, and support the body’s natural healing processes.
What Research Says About Acupuncture and Bell’s Palsy
Research has explored how acupuncture may help support facial nerve recovery by improving blood flow, reducing inflammation, and stimulating the release of natural healing chemicals such as endorphins and enkephalins¹.
A recent randomized controlled trial (Li et al., 2024) compared electroacupuncture with standard electrical therapy in people who still had facial weakness more than a year after Bell’s palsy.
In simple terms:
· Participants received treatment three times a week for six weeks.
· The group receiving electroacupuncture showed greater improvement in facial movement and symmetry compared to the control group.
· No major side effects were reported.
This study suggests that acupuncture, particularly electroacupuncture, may be a safe complementary option to support facial function during recovery².
Earlier systematic reviews, including the Cochrane Database (He, 2022), also found that acupuncture may improve recovery rates when used alongside standard medical care, though more large-scale studies are needed³.
