Anxiety: Is there an Acupuncture needle for it?
Anxiety disorder is a common mental health condition that can affect how people think, feel, and respond to everyday situations. Many individuals experience persistent worry, nervousness, or a sense of unease that can make daily life feel overwhelming.
If you struggle with anxiety, you may notice symptoms such as:
-
constant tension or nervousness
-
difficulty concentrating
-
restlessness
-
nausea or digestive discomfort
-
a racing or pounding heartbeat
These symptoms can make it harder to manage work, social interactions, and everyday responsibilities.
Anxiety in Australia
Anxiety is one of the most common mental health conditions in Australia.
Between 2020 and 2022, more than 1 in 6 Australians aged 16 to 85 experienced an anxiety disorder, with young people and women particularly affected.¹
While occasional anxiety is a normal response to stress, persistent anxiety can become disruptive and significantly affect quality of life.
Some people explore complementary therapies such as Acupuncture to support relaxation and help manage symptoms alongside conventional care.
What Research Says About Acupuncture for Anxiety
Research has explored whether acupuncture may support anxiety management.
A 2013 study compared an integrative treatment approach, including therapeutic acupuncture, with conventional treatment methods in primary care patients experiencing anxiety.
Participants were randomly assigned to one of two groups:
-
one group received acupuncture alongside standard primary care
-
the other group received conventional treatments such as counselling or medication alone²
The study found that patients who received the integrative treatment experienced greater reductions in anxiety and psychological distress compared with those receiving conventional treatment alone.
The researchers concluded that incorporating acupuncture into standard care may enhance treatment outcomes for some individuals living with anxiety.³
How Acupuncture May Help Anxiety
Acupuncture is commonly used to support relaxation and help regulate the body’s stress response.
Treatment may help by:
-
promoting relaxation
-
supporting nervous system balance
-
improving sleep quality
-
reducing physical tension
While experiences vary from person to person, many individuals report feeling calmer and more balanced after treatment.
