Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a natural and reliable treatment in managing various health matters concerning women’s health. Using acupuncture and Chinese herbs our practice specialises in treating endometriosis, polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), pre-menstrual tension, painful, heavy or irregular menstruation, menopause, fertility and pregnancy care.
Inflamed adhesions inside and outside of the uterus can cause pain around the pelvic area during the menstrual cycle. The hormones associated with the menses can also cause the adhesions outside the uterus to swell with blood. These lesions can be found on the ovaries, fallopian tubes, uterine ligaments and bladder. The swelling and bleeding can cause sharp stabbing pain or a dull aching sensation, especially during menstruation.
In TCM, the congealing of blood around the uterus is described as blood stasis. For centuries the Chinese have used acupuncture points and Chinese herbal medicine to sooth and harmonies the flow of blood which in turn alleviates the pain experienced during menstrual bleeding.
It’s a natural aging process for a woman’s menstrual cycle to cease. Hormones that regulate menstruation and ovulation (estrogen and progesterone) have diminished and eggs are no longer released by the ovaries. Symptoms of menopause usually start during the late 40s and can continue for approximately 5 years. Associated symptoms due to hormonal changes include hot flushes, night sweat, virginal dryness, mood swings, insomnia, fatigue, lower back pain and irregular menses.
As a woman reaches menopause, in TCM the yin aspect (water) becomes deficient, the usual fluids released by the body start to reduce and menses comes to a stop. The water element is spent and dried up. As hormone levels fluctuate, the yang aspect (fire) tries to compensate for the yin deficiency and flares up causing the yang to scatter and heat to rise through the body. This heat gives rise to symptoms of hot flushes, night sweats, lower back and knee pain, agitation and insomnia. Acupuncture and Chinese herbal formulas such as Liu Wei Di Huang Wan and Zhi Bai Di Huang Wan can ease the symptoms of menopause and restore the imbalances taking place in the body.
